Impact classification
An impact-rated shingle has passed a specified laboratory test. That is useful evidence about the tested product, not a promise that hail cannot damage it or that an insurer will pay for a replacement.

The best shingle choice fits the roof assembly, the look of the house, and the project budget. Compare construction, profile, and tested features separately so a product label does not carry promises it cannot make.

Three-tab shingles have a flatter, repeating tab pattern. Architectural shingles use a laminated construction for a layered appearance. Designer products create more pronounced profiles and can carry different weight, fastening, and installation requirements.
Color samples show a product closely, but a whole roof reads differently in sun, shade, and beside brick or siding. The useful choice considers the broad finished plane and the details needed at ridges, hips, and valleys.

Product performance depends on the specified fastening, seals, deck, slope, and installation conditions. A product label does not correct an inadequate roof assembly.
Material defect coverage and contractor workmanship coverage address different things. Eligibility, registration, exclusions, transfer rules, and the installed system can affect terms.
A sound deck holds the fasteners. Underlayment provides a secondary layer beneath the covering. Flashing moves water around penetrations and walls, while ventilation needs a path between intake and exhaust. Replacing the shingle without addressing a failed connection leaves the same route for water.
The roof replacement page explains how these parts become one work scope. The warranty guide separates product terms from workmanship terms.
